Troubleshooting Directionally Local
Start with dl doctor, then check logs, Tailscale, keys and tokens.
Start with dl doctor
On the server, run:
dl doctor
It checks each part of the install and tells you what's wrong. Fix what it reports, then run dl up to repair the install.
Look at the logs
dl logs
Your laptop can't reach the server
- Check that your laptop is signed in to the same Tailscale network as the server. A
ts.netaddress only resolves on devices in that network, so on any other device the address simply won't be found. - Check that you're using the full
https://<server>.<tailnet>.ts.netaddress shown at the end of the install. - Run
dl doctoron the server to confirm it's running.
The laptop's code isn't approved
Approve it in the browser window dl connect opened, or on the server with dl connect-laptop CODE.
A task fails to start or can't call a model
The OpenRouter key may be wrong or out of credit. Check the key and your credit in your OpenRouter account. A command for replacing a stored key is coming soon; until then, if the key itself needs to change, open an issue and we'll help.
A task can't clone a repo or open a pull request
The GitHub token needs Contents and Pull requests set to read and write, and access to that repo. Fine-grained tokens also expire, so check the expiry date. You can usually fix access by editing the existing token on GitHub (adding the repo or extending its expiry) without replacing it on the server.
Your laptop's connection expired
Laptop credentials last 90 days. Run dl connect again.
Start over
dl uninstall --purge
curl -fsSL https://directionallylocal.run | sh
