Install Autopilot

Install Autopilot with npm, Homebrew or npx, check the Node.js requirement, and migrate from kimiflare.

Requirements

Autopilot needs one of these Node.js versions:

Release line Minimum version
22 22.23.4
24 24.22.1
26 and later 26.12.1

This matches the engines field in package.json (^22.23.4 || ^24.22.1 || >=26.12.1). Earlier releases have the Brotli bug CVE-2026-111497, and the web_fetch tool refuses to run on them.

You also need a key for at least one model provider, or a local model server such as Ollama or LM Studio. See Models and providers.

Install with npm

npm install -g autopilot-ai
autopilot

The package is autopilot-ai. The command it installs is autopilot.

Install with Homebrew

On macOS or Linux, Homebrew installs Node.js for you:

brew install directionally-local/tap/autopilot
autopilot

Run without installing

npx autopilot-ai

Check the version

autopilot --version

Inside the terminal UI, /update checks for a newer release.

Upgrade

npm install -g autopilot-ai@latest

Migrate from kimiflare

The package was renamed from kimiflare to autopilot-ai. Replace the old package:

npm uninstall -g kimiflare && npm install -g autopilot-ai

Then run autopilot instead of kimiflare. Your settings, sessions, memory and cost history are kept: they stay in ~/.config/kimiflare and ~/.local/share/kimiflare. KIMIFLARE_* environment variables still work.

If you used an earlier kimiflare version that ran on Cloudflare Workers AI, the first launch after upgrading asks for a provider key once. After that:

  • Your theme, MCP and LSP servers, hooks, memory, sessions and cost history carry over.
  • Cloudflare model ids are migrated (for example @cf/moonshotai/kimi-k2.6 becomes moonshotai/kimi-k2.6).
  • Retired Cloudflare fields (OAuth login, gateway, Unified Billing, provider keys) are removed from config.json.
  • /gateway, --cloud and the Cloud-only commands are gone. /multi-agent is retired; subagents now run locally through Hotcell.

Cloudflare Workers AI is still available as a provider (cloudflare). See Models and providers.
